Frequently Asked Questions about using the Merced River Watershed Digital Library

How do I become a member of the Merced River Digital Library?

Click on the "new user?" link (bottom left of the home page), click on the "join" link on the menu bar (upper right corner). Both of these links will lead you to the Registration Form. This information will be private, viewable only by the site administrators, unless you allow otherwise. Before registering, we encourage you to check if you have already been entered into the user database. You can do this by searching for your name in the search box at the upper right.

Once I have logged in, what do I have to do to start entering information and resources?

1. Click on "my folder" in the site menu bar.
2. Click on the "add item" pull down menu in the options bar
3. Select and click on the appropriate content type (document, program, project, etc.) NOTE: If you are entering a resource or project it helps to first make sure all the individuals and organizations associated with it have already been added.
4. Enter information for as many of the fields as possible, e.g. title, abstract, purpose, etc.
5. Click on the next button to enter the next set of metadata fields and save each page. Make sure to click on the "Save" button at the bottom of each page after entering information. Note that information is not sasved when clicking the next button, only when clicking the save button.
6. When you are finished and are ready to share your content with others, go to the 'state' menu at the upper right, and select 'submit'. Portal moderators will review your content and approve it for publication.

How do I edit a document or a resource?

1. Open the resource (by clicking on its title).
2. Click the "edit" tab, above the main content area. If you do not see the "edit" button then change the state from "published" to "retract" by clicking on the "state" drop down menu and clicking on "retract".
3. Click on the edit tab in the "options bar", edit the resource, and click on "save".
4. Be sure to change the state back to "submit" after you are finished editing the resouce.

How can I change my password and/or e-mail address?

1. Click here to access your preferences (you will be asked to log-in)
2. To change your e-mail address: From the preferences page, click on "personal preferences". Update your e-mail address and click on "save".
3. To change your password: From the preferences page click on "change password". Enter your new password and click on "change password".

How do I get back to the Home Page?

1. Click on the site logo, in the upper left corner or click on the "you are here: 'Home'" hyperlink (top left side of the page under the menu bar)

How do I delete an entire document?

1. Open the document
2. Click on the "actions" menu in the "options bar".
3. From the "actions" pull-down menu options, click "delete".

Will another member of this website be able to change or delete the document that I added?

No, only you may edit or a document that you have added. You may allow other members to edit to your document using the 'sharing' tab.

I made changes in the document but they were not saved? What happened?

Make sure to click on the "save" button each time you make changes.

How can I search for a resource or a document in the Merced River Watershed Digital Library?

Enter key word(s) in the search box at the upper right corner of the website and click on "search".

Can I just copy an image and paste it in a document?

No, you cannot copy and paste images. You must save it to your computer and then upload it to your personal folder on this website.
1. Make sure that you are using the image in accordance with the author's licensing policy.
2. Add a new image from the 'add item' menu, select the file for upload by browsing to the location on your computer and click "upload".

How can I adjust the size of an image and decrease its file size?

1. Before uploading an image to this site, open the image in an image-editing program (such as Adobe Photoshop, iPhoto, etc.), adjust the image size and save it as a jpeg.
