Citizen Water Quality Monitoring

This report summarizes the activities of the Upper Merced River Watershed Council in a Citizen Water Quality Monitoring Project funded by a Sierra Nevada Alliance 319(h) grant administered by the State Water Resources Control Board. It also presents the data collected by citizen monitors between October 2004 and October 2005 and provides a preliminary analysis of the data.

Upper Merced River Watershed Council

The Council is composed of inidividuals, representatives of local and environmental organizations, and agency staff who care about the Upper Merced River Watershed. Working together the Council members have identified management strategies that protect the Watershed's resources and implement those strategies with on-the-ground projects. These projects include work on invssive weeds, outreach to residents and tourists, and citizen water quality monitoring.

Active slide on the Merced River by David Greenwood

This panoramic photo shows tan active slide on the Merced River as of June 1, 2006. The slide is located just west of Hites Cove (the confluence of the Merced and the South Fork). The slide has closed Hwy. 140; this major route to Yosemite National Park will remain closed for at least six months.

7th Annual Heartland Festival

A celebration of food, farming and healthy living at Riverdance Farms on the Merced River. Activities on June 17 include U-pick cherries & blueberries, kids' crafts & science, farm tours, Slow Food, farm & garden workshops, live music and poetry. A special Father's Day Farm Breakfast will be followed by a rafting tour on June 18.

Summer Water Quality Monitoring Snapshot

Water monitoring teams will test temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, conductivity, and turbidity at the team's adopted site in the Upper Merced River Watershed. The citizen monitoring project began in September 2004.
