Abstract or Long Description:

George J. Hatfield - State Recreation Area (SRA) in the San Joaquin valley is surrounded by the Merced River. It is especially known for its wildlife, birds and majestic trees. Swimming, fishing and picnicking are popular activities.

From Interstate 5, take the Newman exit into Newman and continue east on County Road J-18 for five miles; the park entrance is just past the San Joaquin River bridge. The weather can be changeable; layered clothing is recommended. First-come first-served camping, contact the park directly for information.
