Vernal Pools - Ephemeral Oasis of the Foothills

This article describes how vernal pools are formed, what animals live in them, what eats the animals that inhabit the vernal pools, and discusses the “unique assemblage of plants, several of which are endemic or only occur in vernal pool habitats.”  It also includes a section on where to visit vernal pools.

"The San Joaquin Valley is home to a unique habitat – vernal pools – that exist largely unnoticed by most of us. Agriculture and urban development are causing vernal pools to disappear before many of us have the chance to learn about, much less appreciate, all they have to offer."
