Monitoring Snow from the Beach in San Diego: Automatic Snow Sensors in the Sierra

Snow measurements and snow surveys were conducted in the Sierra Nevada by use of snow pillows and cosmic snow sensors. The researchers make comparative analysis of these two methods of snow measurement and concluded that cosmic snow sensors offer several advantages.  However, further work is necessary to accurately calibrate and depend on the cosmic snow sensors.

To allow easier and more accurate snow measurements. Cosmic snow sensors can operate on steep slopes and under forest canopies, giving a wide range of snow measurements that may be more representative of the snow contained in the watershed as a whole. They are easier to carry and install and can be placed in remote wilderness areas with minimal impact (i.e. less digging and no antifreeze).
